Morning Prayer

Study the Bible constantly, daily, and, dear one, pray. Ask the divine Love every day to give you all that the Lord’s Prayer inculcates. Go alone by yourself one half hour every morning and ask God, good, ‘Thy kingdom come’ — ask to establish the reign of honesty, peace and purity in your consciousness and to overthrow and cast out all that is unlike the Christ, Love. Ask to forgive those that wrong you even as God forgives you, and see how this must be for you to reflect God. Ask for deliverance from temptation, ask for patience, meekness, peace, and so may the grace of God be with you.

Daily Watch

412 — WATCH lest you accept a feeling of repulsion or antagonism against any expression of animal magnetism, since in so doing you make a reality of it. On page 369 of Science and Health (link) we read, “It is error even to murmur or to be angry over sin.” Mrs. Eddy also once wrote, “Any sense of repulsion is making a reality of whatever it may be.”

The question might be asked: Is this watching point consistent with Mrs. Eddy’s statement on page 277 of Miscellaneous Writings (link), “I cannot help loathing the phenomena of drunkenness produced by animality”? Would not such loathing be making a reality of evil?

The answer is yes, but that learning to loathe sin is a necessary step to its destruction. Mrs. Eddy’s own words solve the dilemma: “There is no sin, and consequently no sinner in Science. True, there is not; but of two evils this is the least when working out the problem of suppositional error, to condemn sin as a claim in order to destroy this false claim. To condemn it, you must see its claim, acknowledge it and loathe it. This action of mortal mind brings the next step, that you will find yourself loving Truth and good in the proportion that you have hated the claims of error and evil, and thus obtained some victory over them.”

Taking Offense by Mary Baker Eddy

Mark 8:33
But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

Stir them; make them either laugh or cry; move them from their foundation; make some impression on them, if not silently then audibly.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the “Blue Book”), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 179

Equanimity
Evenness of mind; that calm temper or firmness of mind which is not easily elated or depressed, which sustains prosperity without excessive joy, and adversity without violent agitation of the passions or depression of spirits.

1828 Webster’s Dictionary

6. 242
Through repentance, spiritual baptism, and regeneration, mortals put off their material beliefs and false individuality. It is only a question of time when “they shall all know Me [God], from the least of them unto the greatest.” Denial of the claims of matter is a great step towards the joys of Spirit, towards human freedom and the final triumph over the body.

Repentence
Real penitence; sorrow or deep contrition for sin, as an offense and dishonor to God, a violation of his holy law, and the basest ingratitude towards a Being of infinite benevolence.

1828 Webster’s Dictionary

Regeneration
In theology, new birth by the grace of God; that change by which the will and natural enmity of man to God and his law are subdued, and a principle of supreme love to God and his law, or holy affections, are implanted in the heart.

1828 Webster’s Dictionary

Pond and Purpose, from Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy

Church Building by Frances Thurber Seal

Straight points God’s finger to the upward road
Which every man must now or later take.
Well may we rid ourselves of our false load
Of sense and self, and wordly ways forsake.

Nor shall we falter at the steep ascent
And seek to find an easy path around,
Lest we shall find our path is downward bent,
And we, alas, are only losing ground.

Is not the very fact that God insists
That we pursue this way a guarantee
Of sure success for him who but persists?
Then let us take our steps rejoicingly.

from Daily Angels by Max Dunaway

6. 242
Self-love is more opaque than a solid body. In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error, — self-will, self-justification, and self-love, — which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death.

Rule in Mrs. Eddy’s household: Simplicity, accuracy, and economy. Excuses are intolerable.

WATCH — Work every day to know that the belief of impossibility has no power over you. Know that it cannot possibly affect you in any way, and can never for an instant hinder your demonstration, whether you are working for health, peace, joy, or any mental quality, thing or experience. Know that you are conscious of the possibility and realization of all that is good and true.

from Divinity Course and General Collectanea, (the “Blue Book”), by Mary Baker Eddy, page 48

Our Master taught his disciples one brief prayer, which we name after him the Lord’s Prayer. Our Master said, “After this manner therefore pray ye,” and then he gave that prayer which covers all human needs. …

Only as we rise above all material sensuousness and sin, can we reach the heaven-born aspiration and spiritual consciousness, which is indicated in the Lord’s Prayer and which instantaneously heals the sick.

Things to handle daily, from Watches, Prayers, and Arguments given by Mary Baker Eddy

Matthew 6:7
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Our unity with churches of other denominations must rest on the spirit of Christ calling us together. It cannot come from any other source. Popularity, self-aggrandizement, aught that can darken in any degree our spirituality, must be set aside. Only what feeds and fills the sentiment with unworldliness, can give peace and good will men.

All Christian churches have one bond of unity, one nucleus or point of convergence, one prayer, — the Lord’s Prayer. It is matter for rejoicing that we unite in love, and in this sacred petition with every praying assembly on earth, — “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

6. Psalm 51 : 1-12
1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Matthew 22:30
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

Chastity is the cement of civilization and progress.

from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, page 57

Matthew 5:28
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Every sexual emotion is a conspiracy against Science.
